Creating a Space

How to create a new isolated environment for financial tracking

Available to all users Any registered user can create a new Space. Upon creation, you automatically and permanently receive the highest role in it — Admin.

Where to find it

  1. Open the app and navigate to the main screen with the list of your spaces.
  2. Tap the floating action button (FAB) with the Pencil icon to enter the list editing mode.
  3. Scroll to the very bottom of the list and tap the Create space button (accompanied by a plus icon).

What is it for

A Space is the basic isolated entity in the Small Metrics app. Inside each space, completely independent tracking is maintained: its own transactions, its own financial goals, and member lists.

This feature is necessary to quickly set up a new workspace for a specific life task (e.g., “Family”, “Business”, or “Personal Money”).

User need

Users need to strictly separate financial flows to avoid chaos when mixing personal and business expenses. By creating a separate space for each project or role, the user gets crystal clear analytics and can safely invite other people there (for example, a spouse to the family budget or an accountant to the business space) without fear of data leaking from their other spaces.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the creation screen (Pencil button -> Create space).
  2. In the required Space Name field, enter a clear name for your new workspace (maximum 100 characters, e.g., “Family” or “Coffee Shop”). The keyboard and focus on this field will appear automatically.
  3. Tap the icon selection field (optional). A bottom sheet will open where you can select a suitable visual symbol (home, wallet, etc.) from the icon grid.
  4. Tap the Save button fixed at the bottom of the screen. A circular loading indicator will appear on the button, preventing double taps.

Expected result

  • Upon successful creation: The creation screen will close automatically, and you will return to the previous screen. The app will force a data update in the background, and the new space will instantly appear in your list. You will automatically become its Owner.
  • In case of errors: If you leave the Space Name field empty, the saving process will not start. If the internet connection is lost during saving or the server returns an error, a red toast notification with a detailed description of the problem will appear at the top of the screen.
